
What is Jenever?
Jenever is a traditional Dutch distillate, made from grains, juniper berries and other herbs.
It is the most consumed domestic distillate and is exported to more than 100 countries in the world.
Since 2008, jenever has even acquired the status of protected geographical indication.
Where is Jenever made?
Jenever is a pure distillate based on grain. The characteristic character in smell and taste of jenever comes from the juniper berry.
Since 2008, jenever may only be produced in the Netherlands, Belgium and the Netherlands. and some German and French provinces.
That year, the drink was given the special status of appellation d'origine controlée, 'protected geographical indication', by the European Union.
The origin of the drink is debatable - the Dutch are convinced that it is a Dutch invention, and the Belgians believe that they discovered jenever.
In any case, jenever is considered a typically Dutch, national distillate in the Netherlands.
Where is Jenever made?
Jenever drink is highly appreciated both at home and abroad. The well-known Dutch jenever brand Bols exports to no fewer than 110 countries.
In the Netherlands, jenever is still the best-selling spirit with a share of over 20%.
This means that the Dutch consume no less than 17 million litres of jenever per year. Jenever can be drunk neat, but also tastes delicious in various mixes.
