What is Stroh Rum?

Stroh, also known as strohrum in everyday language, is a strong alcoholic drink from Austria. Stroh Rum was first made in 1832 in Klagenfurt. The name of the drink is named after inventor Sebastian Stroh. Stroh is available in more than 30 countries. It is Austria's most famous strong alcoholic drink brand. More than 10 million bottles are sold annually.

How is Stroh Rum made?

The raw material for Strohrum is sugar cane molasses. After fermentation, the alcohol is extracted from this by means of column distillation. The manufacturer then adds colorants, fragrances and flavor essences. For this last reason, the drink does not meet the European definition of rum, and the drink may not be sold as 'rum' in the EU and is marketed under the name Stroh.

How much alcohol does Stroh Rum contain?

It is available in four varieties: Stroh 38, Stroh 60, Stroh 80 and Stroh Jagertee. The numbers represent the alcohol percentage in the drinks.

What does Stroh Rum taste like?

troh has the smell and taste of vanilla, oak and a hint of orange with almonds. The strong varieties are often used as an ingredient for cocktails (including B-52 cocktail, punches (including the Feuerzangenbowle) and cakes, especially from Austrian cuisine.

What types of Stroh Rum are there?

Stroh 80

Stroh 80 has an alcohol percentage of 80%. This drink is intended for mixing or as an addition to cooking. Drinking it directly is also possible, but it is then advisable to dilute the Stroh Rum with at least an equal amount of water.

Stroh 60

Stroh 60 is most often used in the kitchen as an ingredient in all kinds of baking products such as cakes, pies and pancakes. But also in fruit bowls and the rumtopf. This Stroh Rum is also usually not used directly undiluted consumed.

Stroh 40

Stroh 40 is only available in the Netherlands as Stroh 38. This drink can be drunk directly. This Stroh rum is sometimes drunk in a mix, such as with cola or chocolate milk.

Stroh Jagertee

Jagertee is a hot drink from Austria made from black tea, Stroh rum and herbal extracts such as vanilla, star anise and cinnamon. Stroh Jagertee contains 40% alcohol. This hot drink is drunk with 1 part Stroh Jagertee and 2 parts hot water. Jagertee is very popular with winter sports enthusiasts and is therefore served in many Austrian après-ski bars. Jagertee can sometimes be underestimated because the sugar, herbs and tea mask the alcohol taste, which means that people drink more quickly and the alcohol hits harder.
