What is Ouzo?

Ouzo is perhaps the best-known Greek alcoholic drink and tastes like anise.

How is Ouzo made?

Ouzo is distilled in copper stills from a precise combination of alcohol (ethanol), anise (Pimpinella Anisum), star anise, cardamom, corn, angelica (angelica root), lime blossom and coriander. The precise ratio of the ingredients is often a well-kept (family) secret. However, the flavour that comes to the fore most is that of anise. For the simpler (cheaper) ouzo, fennel is used instead of anise.

Similar aniseed drinks are raki (Turkey), sambuca (Italy), pastis (France), hierbas (Balaeren) and absinthe (France).

How much alcohol is in Ouzo?

Ouzo has an alcohol percentage between 37.5 and 44 percent.
