A strainer highly regarded in professional circles goes by the name Hawthornestrainer. Named after the inventor and always made in silver. The striking thing about this strainer is that the openings in the round plate, the sieve holes, are arranged in such a way that they form the word Hawthorne. The Hawthornes trainer always lacks the clamping hooks, so working with it requires some practice. The actual function of the bar strainer is to prevent ice cubes, ice chips or other solid components from entering the cocktail after shaking or stirring. An unwritten law in cocktail making is that a cocktail served without ice should not contain an "up" of any kind.
