Orange bitter

What is Oranjebitter?

Orange bitters and Orange liqueur are liqueurs made from distilled curaçao peels, bitter oranges and brandy. Originally, sugar was added to Orange liqueur, but not to Orange bitters. Orange bitters are drunk during festivities around the Royal House.

Where does Oranjebitter come from?

Orange liqueur was developed after 1620 in honour of various battles won by Frederik Hendrik. Until around 1800, the drink was relatively unknown. After the accession of the first Orange King Willem I in 1814, the product was re-launched. This time without sugar. Hence the name Oranjebitter. Nowadays, people are no longer charmed by bitters and most producers add some sugar again.
